Texas CASA launched Lift Your Voice, a statewide campaign to recruit African American volunteers that will speak up for the best interest of children in foster care. Across Texas and even on a national level, African-American children are being removed from their homes at a faster rate than other children. Yet there is no evidence that African-American parents abuse or neglect their children at a higher rate.
Research shows that a one-to-one relationship between a foster child and a supportive adult can lead to positive changes in a young person’s life. Over half the children in foster care do not have a CASA volunteer.
A CASA volunteer gets to know the child and speaks to everyone involved in the child’s life, including family members, teachers, doctors, lawyers, social workers and others.
